Residenties

Nesse heeft een doorlopend residentieprogramma waarvoor kunstenaars en ontwerpers worden uitgenodigd om voor een bepaalde periode site-specifiek te werken. Tijdens hun verblijf reflecteren zij op hoe mondiale tendensen samenkomen binnen de unieke context van Terneuzen en Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, en hoe deze lokale realiteit zich verhoudt tot bredere maatschappelijke, ecologische en economische ontwikkelingen.

Nesse selecteert kunstenaars en ontwerpers die artistiek onderzoek doen binnen vijf samenhangende programmalijnen: Being in the World, Food & Industry, Sources of Energy, Learning from the Stream en Shared Urgencies.

Being in the World
Deze lijn vormt de ruggengraat van de organisatie. Het beschouwt het bouwen van de instelling zelf als een artistieke en maatschappelijke daad. Hier staat infrastructurele kritiek centraal: hoe bouwen we een organisatie die fungeert als een 'common' (gemeengoed)? Het is een onderzoek naar alternatieve manieren van institutionaliseren, waarbij openheid en kwetsbaarheid van een gedeelde wereld leidend zijn.

Food and Industry
Landbouw en zware voedselindustrie opereren naast elkaar in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Ze laten zien hoe twee benaderingen van voedselproductie samenkomen op één plek. Deze lijn onderzoekt welke handelingen en verbeeldingen nodig zijn om de relaties tussen voedselproductie, arbeid en gemeenschap te herstellen.

Sources of Energy
In Zeeland, waar traditionele en hernieuwbare energiebronnen samenkomen, richt deze programmalijn zich op de wisselwerking tussen energienetwerken, de leefomgeving en de sociale en economische structuren die daardoor worden gevormd. De lijn verkent de energietransitie van fossiele brandstoffen naar duurzame energiebronnen en onderzoekt welke alternatieve energie te vinden is binnen natuurlijke processen.

Learning from the Stream
Leren van water betekent niet alleen kijken naar een fysiek element dat ons cultureel verbindt en fysiek scheidt, maar ook de wereld interpreteren vanuit waterlichamen in de breedste zin van het woord. Kunstenaars onderzoeken waterstromen, havenactiviteiten en ecologische systemen als vloeibare netwerken die menselijke en niet-menselijke levensvormen met elkaar verbinden.

Shared Urgencies
Shared Urgencies plaatst kunstenaars binnen organisaties om, geïnspireerd door de Britse ‘Artist Placement Group’, via reflectie en artistieke autonomie nieuwe perspectieven te bieden op complexe maatschappelijke vraagstukken.

Nesse runs an ongoing residency programme in which artists and designers are invited to work site-specifically for a defined period of time. During their stay, they reflect on how global tendencies converge within the unique context of Terneuzen and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, and how this local reality relates to broader social, ecological and economic developments.

Nesse selects artists and designers whose research aligns with five interconnected programme lines: Being in the World, Food & Industry, Sources of Energy, Learning from the Stream and Shared Urgencies.

Being in the World
This line forms the backbone of the organisation. It considers the building of the institution itself as an artistic and civic act. At its core lies infrastructural critique: how can we build an organisation that functions as a common? It explores alternative modes of institutionalisation, guided by openness and an awareness of the vulnerability inherent to a shared world.

Food & Industry
In Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, agriculture and large-scale food industry operate side by side, revealing how two approaches to food production intersect in one place. This line investigates the actions and imaginaries needed to restore relationships between food production, labour and community.

Sources of Energy
In Zeeland, where traditional and renewable energy sources converge, this programme line focuses on the interplay between energy networks, the living environment and the social and economic structures they shape. It explores the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy and examines what alternative forms of energy can be found within natural processes.

Learning from the Stream
Learning from water means not only observing a physical element that both connects and separates us, but also interpreting the world from the perspective of bodies of water in the broadest sense. Artists explore waterways, port activities and ecological systems as fluid networks linking human and more-than-human life forms.

Shared Urgencies
Shared Urgencies places artists within organisations to offer new perspectives on complex societal issues through reflection and artistic autonomy, inspired by the approach of the Artist Placement Group.
