Pascal Gielen

Vanaf maart 2026 verwelkomt Nesse cultuursocioloog Pascal Gielen als think-resident en organisatiedramaturg. Hij doet dit in het kader van Being in the World, de programmalijn die de ruggengraat van Nesse vormt en het bouwen van de organisatie zelf beschouwt als een artistieke en maatschappelijke daad. Centraal staat de vraag hoe een organisatie kan functioneren als een 'common' (gemeengoed): een onderzoek naar alternatieve manieren van institutionaliseren, waarbij openheid en kwetsbaarheid van een gedeelde wereld leidend zijn.
Pascal Gielen is hoogleraar cultuursociologie aan het Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (ARIA) van de Universiteit Antwerpen, waar hij de onderzoeksgroep Culture Commons Quest Office (CCQO) leidt. Zijn werk situeert zich op het snijvlak van politiek, samenleving en creatieve arbeid.
Als think-resident komt Gielen de komende tijd geregeld langs bij Nesse. Hij gaat in gesprek met de medewerkers, de verbonden kunstenaars en ontwerpers, en denkt mee over de vragen en moeilijkheden waar Nesse als organisatie in ontwikkeling mee worstelt.
Een dramaturg komt oorspronkelijk uit het theater: iemand die naast de regisseur staat en het werk bevraagt. Wat probeer je te zeggen? Klopt de structuur? Wat ontbreekt er nog? Als organisatiedramaturg verschuift Pascal Gielen dat principe van de scène naar de organisatie zelf. De organisatie wordt als het ware het "stuk" dat wordt bevraagd: Wat probeert Nesse te zijn? Kloppen de gemaakte keuzes met de uitgesproken waarden? Zitten er blinde vlekken in de structuur of de manier van werken?
De komende maanden organiseren we drie momenten. Op 9 en 10 maart leert Pascal Gielen de organisatie beter kennen en gaat hij in gesprek met studenten van de Design Academy Eindhoven en ambtenaren en bestuurders van de Gemeente Terneuzen. Op 21 en 22 april wordt hij verbonden aan KASK Curatorial Studies en de kunstenaars en ontwerpers die aan Nesse zijn gelieerd. Van 24 tot en met 26 juni organiseert Nesse samen met Pascal Gielen een publiek programma, met onder andere een collegedag.

From March 2026, Nesse welcomes cultural sociologist Pascal Gielen as think-resident and organisational dramaturg. He does so in the context of Being in the World — the programme strand that forms the backbone of Nesse and regards the building of the organisation itself as an artistic and social act. Central to this is the question of how an organisation can function as a 'common': an investigation into alternative ways of institutionalising, guided by openness and the vulnerability of a shared world.
Pascal Gielen is Professor of Cultural Sociology at the Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (ARIA) at the University of Antwerp, where he leads the research group Culture Commons Quest Office (CCQO). His work sits at the intersection of politics, society and creative labour.
As think-resident, Gielen will visit Nesse regularly over the coming period. He will enter into conversation with staff, affiliated artists and designers, and think alongside the questions and difficulties that Nesse faces as an organisation in development.
A dramaturg originally comes from the theatre: someone who stands beside the director and questions the work. What are you trying to say? Does the structure hold? What is still missing? As organisational dramaturg, Pascal Gielen shifts that principle from the stage to the organisation itself. The organisation becomes, as it were, the "piece" being questioned: What is Nesse trying to be? Do the choices made align with the values being expressed? Are there blind spots in the structure or the way of working?
Over the coming months, we are organising three moments. On 9 and 10 March, Pascal Gielen gets to know the organisation and enters into conversation with students from the Design Academy Eindhoven and civil servants and administrators from the Municipality of Terneuzen. On 21 and 22 April, he will be connected to KASK Curatorial Studies and the artists and designers affiliated with Nesse. From 24 to 26 June, Nesse and Pascal Gielen will organise a public programme, including a lecture day.
