Voor de tentoonstelling Mending Lands presenteert Marte Mei de resultaten van een jaarlang onderzoek naar PPFAS-vervuiling en fytoremediatie. Hiervoor ontwikkelde ze een film, biomaterialen en designobjecten die te zien zijn bij St. Vincents in Antwerpen.
Marte Mei werkte voor het project met de teelt van hennepplanten op vervuilde grond. Deze planten nemen PFAS op uit de bodem en zuiveren zo geleidelijk het milieu. De geoogste, vervuilde planten worden een nieuwe, ambigue grondstof, die Marte Mei transformeert tot biomaterialen en een reeks designobjecten.
Het project werd ontwikkeld tijdens haar residentie bij Nesse, waar Marte Mei werkte vanuit haar methode van Land-Allyship: een praktijk waarin wordt samengewerkt met meer-dan-menselijke entiteiten zoals planten, en waarbij het ontwerpproces zelf een ethische en ecologische positie inneemt.
De tentoonstelling gaat gepaard met de korte documentaire PFASLANDS (30 min.), die Marte Mei volgt in haar onderzoek naar het herstellend vermogen van hennep op met PFAS vervuilde bodem. De film combineert poëtische cinematografie met point-of-view procesbeelden, fragmenten uit diepte-interviews en een originele soundtrack opgebouwd uit veldopnames.
De tentoonstelling opent op 14 mei en loopt tot en met 21 augustus.

For the exhibition Mending Lands at St. Vincents in Antwerp, Marte Mei presents the results of a year-long research into PFAS contamination and phytoremediation with a film, material research and design objects.
Marte Mei worked with the cultivation and regenerative power of hemp plants on contaminated soil. These plants absorb PFAS from the ground, gradually purifying the environment. The contaminated harvested plants become a new, ambiguous raw material, which Marte Mei transforms into biomaterials and a series of design objects.
The project was developed during her residency at Nesse, where Marte Mei worked through her method of Land-Allyship: working in alliance with more-than-human entities such as plants, in which the design process itself takes an ethical and ecological position.
The exhibition is accompanied by the short documentary PFASLANDS (30 min.), which follows Marte Mei in her investigation into the restorative potential of hemp on PFAS-contaminated soil. The film combines poetic cinematography with point-of-view process shots, fragments from in-depth interviews, and an original soundtrack composed from field recordings.
The exhibition opens on 14 May and runs until 21 August.
