Boottocht van Gent naar Terneuzen
Sinds januari 2025 trekt Nesse de werkgroep van de TOOP Just Cruising, een initiatief van de Cultuurdienst Gent. Deze TOOP beoogt de verbinding tussen Gent, Zeeland en de omliggende regio te versterken, met water als verbindend thema. Centraal staat het Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, dat letterlijk en figuurlijk de stroomlijn vormt van deze samenwerking.
De onderliggende leervraag luidt: Hoe kunnen we het belang, de kwetsbaarheid en de noodzaak van water beter zichtbaar maken en hoger op de maatschappelijke en politieke agenda krijgen?
Een belangrijk ijkpunt is het 200-jarig bestaan van het Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen in 2027. Dat jubileum willen we vieren met een groots, grensoverschrijdend festival op, rond en in het water – over de volledige 30 kilometer van het kanaal. We zien dit als een unieke kans om samen met partners uit Zeeland en Vlaanderen kunst- en cultuurprojecten te ontwikkelen die deze mijlpaal kracht bijzetten.
Na twee inspirerende sessies – in CAMPO Gent en in Nesse – zijn we op woensdag 7 mei het kanaal opgegaan. Aan boord van de Vrijbuiter voeren we over het Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, begeleid door boeiende verhalen en reflecties van onder anderen Wouter Hillaert, Wiebe Radstake, David Dhert, David Dumount, Cathy Jacob, Tina de Gent en Dani Ploeger.

Boat Trip from Ghent to Terneuzen
Since January 2025, Nesse has been leading the working group of the TOOP Just Cruising, an initiative of the Culture Department of Ghent. This TOOP aims to strengthen the connection between Ghent, Zeeland, and the surrounding region, with water as the unifying theme. At the heart of this collaboration lies the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, both literally and symbolically forming the central current of the project.
The core question guiding this trajectory is: How can we raise awareness of the importance, fragility, and necessity of water, and bring it higher up on political and societal agendas?
A key milestone is the 200th anniversary of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal in 2027. We plan to celebrate this with a large-scale, cross-border festival on, around, and in the water – spanning the full 30 kilometres of the canal. We see this as a unique opportunity to develop cultural and artistic projects together with partners from Zeeland and Flanders, giving meaningful shape to this historic occasion.
Following two inspiring sessions – in CAMPO Ghent and in Nesse – we set out on the canal on Wednesday 7 May. Aboard the Vrijbuiter, we sailed along the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, accompanied by engaging stories and reflections from Wouter Hillaert, Wiebe Radstake, David Dhert, David Dumount, Cathy Jacob, Tina de Gent, and Dani Ploeger.
